According to Fairlawn Police, officers responded around 3 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the mall’s front parking lot. Upon arrival, police identified the teenage suspect, who allegedly fled the scene on foot before being quickly apprehended after a brief pursuit. Officers recovered a firearm and shell casings believed to be connected to the incident.
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the suspect and another group of teenagers. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly fired two shots into the air, causing panic among shoppers, employees, and nearby families.
As a precaution, Summit Mall was placed on lockdown while officers conducted a full search of the property. The mall was later cleared after authorities confirmed there were no additional threats to public safety.
Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the response, including officers from Akron, Bath Township, Copley Township, Summit Metro Parks, Kent State University, and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
