Louis Trichardt Accident: A tragic bus accident on the N1 near the Witvlag off-ramp outside Louis Trichardt has claimed the lives of eight people and left dozens injured. The devastating crash occurred on Thursday evening at approximately 6:00 p.m. in the Makhado Municipality, sending shockwaves through the community.
According to reports, the bus was travelling from Johannesburg to Malawi when it allegedly suffered mechanical failure. Authorities say the driver was unable to apply the brakes, causing the vehicle to lose control, veer off the N1 roadway, and plunge into a deep ravine near the Witvlag turn-off.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the horrific scene. Seven passengers were declared dead on-site, while another victim later died from injuries while being transported to hospital. A total of 44 passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed deep sadness following the tragedy.
“On behalf of the people of Limpopo, I extend sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” she said.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. The Department of Transport also announced intensified law enforcement operations along the N1 corridor to help reduce fatal road accidents.
Motorists and transport operators are being urged to conduct proper vehicle inspections before long-distance travel to ensure roadworthiness and passenger safety.
