Livermore traffic on 580 Suicide and Isabel Ave: A major police response caused severe traffic delays on Interstate 580 near Isabel Avenue in Livermore on Friday afternoon as authorities responded to what officials described as a mental health crisis involving a person on an overpass.
According to the California Highway Patrol, all lanes of I-580 were temporarily shut down in both directions while officers and crisis negotiators worked to safely resolve the situation. Around 2:35 p.m., CHP issued a severe traffic alert warning motorists of major freeway closures and heavy congestion throughout the area.
By approximately 3 p.m., eastbound lanes of I-580 were closed at State Route 84, causing traffic to back up for miles. Witnesses described long lines of stopped vehicles, with some drivers stepping outside their cars or standing on top of vehicles trying to understand what was happening ahead.
Authorities stated that officers were negotiating with an individual experiencing a mental health crisis on the overpass above the freeway. A significant law enforcement presence remained at the scene throughout the afternoon, including patrol vehicles positioned along the interstate and nearby roads.
Officials advised commuters to avoid the area and use alternate routes, including State Route 84 or Interstate 680 connecting to State Route 4. No estimated reopening time was immediately provided as negotiations continued.
The incident created major delays during the busy Friday commute and drew widespread attention across the community. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the individual involved as the situation remains under investigation.
