Charles Eugene “Gene” Bishop Death Obituary 2026: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Eugene Bishop, known affectionately as “Gene,” who passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 93. A respected leader, devoted family man, and lifelong steward of the land, Gene’s life and legacy continue to shape the community he loved.

A proud fourth-generation member of the Bishop family, Gene dedicated his life to Bishop’s Orchards, joining the family business full-time in 1952 after graduating college. His vision, determination, and tireless work ethic helped transform the farm into a thriving year-round destination.
Gene played a pivotal role in expanding the orchard through the acquisition and development of land on New England Road, where he personally helped clear fields that would become the foundation of today’s orchards. He was instrumental in transitioning the business from a seasonal stand to a year-round market in 1971 and helped launch the beloved Pick Your Own tradition enjoyed by generations of families.
Even after semi-retiring in 2000, Gene remained deeply connected to the orchards, continuing to work on the farm well into his later years, tending trees, mowing fields, and supporting daily operations with pride and humility.
Beyond agriculture, Gene dedicated his life to public service in Guilford. He served in the Rotary Club, helped establish community events, volunteered as a firefighter, and contributed to local government boards, including serving as First Selectman.
Gene is survived by his loving family, who carry forward his values of hard work, service, and community dedication.
Funeral arrangements and memorial service details will be announced by the family. A celebration of life is planned to honor his extraordinary contributions and lasting legacy.
