A serious crash along the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada Highway early Friday morning left one driver with life-threatening injuries and has prompted an impaired driving investigation by West Shore RCMP.
According to police, officers responded around 12:26 a.m. on May 8, 2026, to a two-vehicle collision involving a 2000 Subaru Outback and a 2012 Cadillac SRX near Finlayson Arm Road in the Goldstream Park area.
Investigators say the crash caused severe injuries to the driver of the Subaru, who was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services for urgent medical treatment. The driver of the Cadillac also sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
West Shore RCMP stated that the driver of the Cadillac allegedly showed signs and symptoms of impairment at the scene, and an impaired driving investigation is now underway. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved as investigators continue working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.
Due to the seriousness of the crash, the RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene to assist with the investigation. The northbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway between West Shore Parkway and Aspen Road were closed for several hours, from approximately 12:30 a.m. until 7:10 a.m., causing major traffic disruptions for overnight travelers and early morning commuters.
Police continue to ask drivers to use caution on the highways and remind motorists of the dangers associated with impaired driving. No further details have been released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
